Did you know that Breaking, one of the disciplines in Dancesport is one of the new Olympic sports which will be featured in the Paris 2024 Games?
In simple words, DanceSport, which is competitive ballroom dancing and other disciplines, was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1997, and is finally making its appearance at the Olympics!
Firstly, it was a pleasure to be part of the 2nd Anniversary and Web Launch of DanceSport Sri Lanka the national governing body for DanceSport in Sri Lanka on the 27th of March at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo (the official website of DanceSport Sri Lanka is dancesportlanka.com)
The formal proceedings commenced at 4.30 p.m. with dignitaries representing DanceSport Sri Lanka, the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and fortune Entertainment the Sole Sponsor of DanceSport Sri Lanka. The welcome address was delivered by Mr. Malinga Fernando, the President of DSSL, followed by the first dance routine on Cha Cha and Jive by the El Latino Dance Academy by Kevin Nugara
Mr. Gobinath Sivarajah the Secretary of DSSL delivered his speech on “DanceSport in Globe and its growth in Sri Lanka”. The key points mentioned were that DanceSport was recognized as a sport in May 1957 when World Dance Sport Federation was established in Lausanne, Switzerland as its first governing body, followed by several name changes.
The reasons to promote dance as a sport are that it is healthy, inexpensive, genderblind, and ageless, making it a sport for all. The discipline of ‘Breaking’ made its first appearance in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. Now, Breaking will be introduced in the Olympic Games as it makes its Olympic debut next year along with Sport Climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing as new sports.
A special address was made by veteran ballroom dancer Mr. Kevin Nugara, the Director of Development of DSSL. Having witnessed the performances of the very young breakdancers from CJ’s Dance Lab, B-Boys of Cypher of Culture, Island Stompers and Ballroom Dancers of El Latino Dance Academy, it was evident that DanceSport in Sri Lanka has a lot of potentials to grow as a competitive sport and a chance to be an Olympian!
